While passing another vehicle, how do you know when it's safe to return to your lane?

When you look in the mirror and see pavement in front of the vehicle you're passing

After finishing a pass, you want a clear, safe gap before moving back over. The best cue here is to check your rearview mirror and see pavement in front of the vehicle you just passed. That view means the other vehicle is clearly ahead and you’ve gained enough distance to re-enter without cutting them off or forcing them to brake. It also shows you’re no longer in their blind spot and have a stable following distance.

Relying on the other driver signaling is not reliable, and merely seeing the other vehicle’s headlights or part of its body in a mirror doesn’t guarantee you have enough space. The pavement ahead of the passed vehicle in your mirror provides the clearest sign that you’re safely clear to return.
